More Public Awareness of PLBs Needed to Prevent Loss of Life.

Hand held Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) use satellite technology to locate individuals lost, injured, or stranded in the wilderness.

MUKILTEO, WA. December 19, 2006 – Although Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) have been steadily increasing in popularity after being approved for use by individuals in the U.S. in July of 2003, many people still haven’t heard about them or know what their purpose is. Weighing in at less than a pound, PLBs are hand held emergency devices that use satellite technology to locate individuals who have become lost, injured, or stranded in the wilderness. When activated, PLBs send out a distress signal which is immediately detected by SARSAT (Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking) satellites. The distress information, including the location coordinates of the person(s) in distress is then passed on to the appropriate search and rescue organization, all in a matter of minutes.

In the past two weeks, there have been two tragic deaths in the Pacific Northwest. James Kim was found dead December 6 after leaving his family in their stranded vehicle to find help. Kelly James, one of three lost climbers on Mt. Hood, was found dead in a snow cave on December 17. “It’s very difficult to hear about the deaths of James Kim and one of the climbers lost on Mt. Hood, knowing that they probably didn’t even know about PLBs.” said Kevin Stoltz, President of PLB Rentals, LLC in Mukilteo, Washington. “We all need to do a much better job of getting the word out about PLBs and how accessible they are to anyone who might need them”.  PLB Rentals rents PLBs nationwide through their website at www.PLBRentals.com for around $50/week.

To help promote PLB awareness and education, PLB Rentals will be providing some of their rental units at no charge to local outdoor recreation organizations who take an active role in PLB awareness for their members as well as the general public. Organizations interested in taking advantage of this offer should contact Kevin Stoltz at kstoltz@PLBRentals.com.

PLB Rentals, LLC provides nationwide PLB rentals through their website at www.PLBRentals.com.
